The tendency in sport is for the new, inexperienced and less qualified coaches to take the younger players and for the best coaches to work with the first team or the elite players. There is a sort of logic to this but increasingly sports have come to realise that the best coaches also need to work with the younger players so that good technique is embedded at the right age.

Qualified and Experienced
‘The most critical stages to long term athlete development are for children aged 8 to 12. These are known as the ‘FUNdamental’ and ‘Training to Train’ stages. Coaching at these levels require knowledgeable and experienced coaches who can correctly perform and demonstrate skills for the children’. Istvan Balyi
